More than a Statistic
ADHD affects about 7.2% of school-aged children, presenting unique hurdles that can impact school performance, relationships, and overall quality of life. It’s more than hyperactivity, impulsivity, or inattention. It’s about a human – filled with boundless potential and a unique learning style. A skilled practitioner recognizes and respect these individual challenges and strengths, offering comprehensive strategies for each unique journey.
Knowledge is Power
Current research suggests that ADHD is linked to imbalances of catecholamines in a region of the brain called the pre-frontal cortex. However, what if I told you that other aspects influence these imbalances? Factors such as:
- The gut microbiome
- Dietary factors
- Sleep disordered breathing
- And even adverse childhood events
The journey to understand ADHD is complex, but you don’t have to navigate the ins and outs alone.
My Story
I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 14.
Ever since elementary school, I struggled finishing exams within the allotted time allowed. I found it frustrating that it took me significantly more effort than my peers to grasp concepts and complete assignments.
Not wanting to fall behind in school, I realized I needed to take extra steps to ensure I had the resources available to me to be successful in my future academic endeavors.
After undergoing a psychoeducational evaluation, I was enrolled in the Disabled Students Program, where I was granted special accommodations to take my exams in a separate quiet room with additional time. I was also prescribed stimulant medications.
It wasn’t until I started working with a naturopathic doctor and made specific diet and lifestyle changes that I started to notice a major difference in my ability to focus and complete tasks efficiently. So much that I was able to recently take (and successfully pass) my medical licensing examination with the rest of my cohort, without the need for special accommodations.
Over the past 16 years, I have learned and implemented a lot! And I want to share what I have learned with you…
